Sign up for bowls floodlit event

ENTRIES are still being taken for Saracens Head Bowls Club's Autumn Open Floodlit competition.

The event boasts £1,330 in prize money subject to entries and is open to both male and female bowlers.

The dates of play are September 27, 28, 29 and 30 plus October 4, 5, 6 and 7. Practice will begin at 6.15pm for a 6.45pm start and bowlers will play three games.

The finals night will be held on October 11 and will have a 3.30pm practice for a 4pm start.

Anyone interested in taking part in the competition should send a £10 entrance fee to Ivan Rutter, 74 Lovely Lane, Warrington, WA5 1PG. Cheques should be made payable to Saracens Head Bowling Club.

New proposals

WARRINGTON Women's Evening Bowls League members should note that proposals for November's annual meeting must be received by secretary P. Haughton by September 18.

Meanwhile, the league's Chadburn Trophy winner was C. Lockett, of Tetley B. She beat Red Lion's A. Greigh in the final. The losing semi-finalists were J. Ralphs, of Tetley A, and B Jones, of St. Albans.

Alford ace M. Ure won the President's Cup. The runner-up was M. Chapman, of Kings A, while J. Wanbon, of St. Oswalds, and P. Deakin, of Woolston B, reached the semi-finals.

Welsby blooms

BRIAN Welsby was on fire at the Southport Flower Show Bowls Festival Handicap.

The 54-year-old Appleton bowler wiped the floor with seven opponents to record one of his biggest wins of the season.

Welsby's performances in the latter stages were particularly impressive. He defeated highly rated Blackpool bowler Mike Leach 21-14 in the semi-finals before overcoming Wigan's Mike Riding in a one-sided final.

Welsby triumphed 21-15 to secure the £600 first prize in the 128-strong event.

Bewsey back

WARRINGTON Women's Evening Bowls League's Greenalls competition will take place on September 15.

It will be the first bowls main to be held at Bewsey Park for more than three years and it will start at 1pm. The league's latest delegates meeting will be held at the same venue at the same time. All representatives should attend.

Anyone interested in playing in the Greenalls competition, which has a £1 entrance fee, should contact Marie Bacon on 725044.

Club's race night

GRAPPENHALL Sports Football Club are hoping to recruit some quality players.

They train at Stockton Lane in Grappenhall at 7pm on Tuesdays.

RYLANDS Sharks under 11s Rugby League side are on the lookout for new players.
