Mrs Martha (Matt) Hampson died on August 9, aged 93.
Mrs Hampson, of Alexandra Nursing Home, Newton-le-Willows, and formerly of Earlestown and Aldershot, was born in Viaduct Street.
She was first employed in service in Manchester, then later worked at Vulcan Foundry, Viaduct Carriage Works, and was eventually employed at Winwick Hospital, where she qualified as a nurse and worked for 15 years up to her retirement at the age of 68.
After her retirement, Mrs Hampson devoted her life to good causes, running the local friendship clubs for Age Concern.
Mrs Hampson leaves two children, six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A service was held on August 18 at St John the Baptist Church, Newton, followed by cremation at St Helens crematorium. The Rev Miss McClusky officiated.
Arrangements were made by Co-operative Funeral Services.
