Hare & Hounds 14
Higginshaw 40
HOUNDS made a disappointing start to the new season as they slumped to defeat against a well-organised Oldham outfit.
The home side never really recovered from a disastrous opening spell that saw them gift the visitors a 12-point lead in as many minutes.
An interception try by winger Ste Jackson briefly raised Hounds' hopes, but by the interval Higginshaw had pulled away again to lead 22-6.
Hounds had their best spell of the match early in the second half and should have more to show for their efforts than a try by second-row Wayne Ashcroft from a good pass by skipper Paul Martin.
Sloppy handling at vital times though cost them dearly and Higginshaw weathered the storm to regain control.
Hounds grabbed a consolation try by the hard-working Ashcroft, goaled by Kevin Parylo.
Best for Hounds were Ashcroft and centre Dave Worrall.
