POLICE are hunting a robber who is believed to have targeted two off-licences at the weekend.

A man armed with what is thought to have been a knife threatened staff at Booze Busters off-licence, High Street, Newton-le-Willows before escaping with cash and a large batch of cigarettes. The robbery happened at about 4.30pm on Saturday, August 30.

The next day, at about 1.15pm, at Market, Street, Newton-le-Willows, a man shouted at staff in Victoria Wines off-licence to open the till. However, police say staff ran to the back off the shop and the man fled empty-handed.

Police have confirmed that they suspect the incidents are related. The descriptions of the man given after the robberies are similar.

In the first incident, he was said to be wearing a navy tracksuit with the hood up and white trainers. He is described as being about 5ft 8ins tall with a slim build.

During the failed robbery, the crook was wearing a dark grey Adidas tracksuit with the hood up. He was 5ft 8in to 5ft 9in tall.
