CARING townsfolk have been praised after they rushed to help an elderly lady who had taken a tumble in Bridge Street.
Sheila Whittaker, 59, was taking her 89-year-old mother Florence Appleton for her regular trip to pick up her pension.
Florence suddenly stumbled after holding her great grandson's hand.
"The amount of people who helped us was amazing. It was heart-warming.
"There was a gentleman there who had done first aid. There was also a lovely lady who took her coat off and put it under my mum's head even though she was bleeding. Then a man from the post office got my husband from around the corner".
Florence was taken to Whiston Hospital where she was treated for cuts and bruises.
"She's much better now, but is still aching", said Sheila.
