FEARS concerning traffic problems on one of Warrington's busiest roads have led to plans for a new nursery being thrown out.

Developers had wanted to change 198 Knutsford Road in Grappenhall into a children's day nursery.

But after a meeting on Wednesday night, councillors decided the application could not go ahead.

Resident Lucy Tavender told the development control committee that the plans were not workable.

She added: "Our main reason for objecting is that there is no space for parental parking - the only area is in front of the houses, but there is only enough room for two cars.

"Anywhere else will block access to businesses and garages. Say it takes five minutes to drop off one child - when in fact it actually can take a lot longer, multiply that by 50 children.

"We are not against commercial usage in the area but the safety of children crossing in rush hour traffic is at risk - it's an accident waiting to happen."

Clr Wendy Johnson, ward member for Grappenhall and Thelwall, said: "There just isn't the parking on Knutsford Road. This part of the road is a major route into town.

"I would not put a child of mine at risk with these traffic problems."

Gareth Jackson, the applicant, said: "We would be contributing to the local economy and assisting parents with childcare. It will be a benefit to the community."

But the members disagreed and refused the blueprints.
