POLICE have confirmed that a body found in the Mersey was that of missing Warrington woman Elayne McWhirter.

The 31-year-old had been missing since February 11 and police confirmed yesterday, Monday, that a body found over Easter was Miss McWhirter.

Police were called to the water near Ferry Inn in Penketh, following reports of a body floating on Good Friday, March 25.

Police recovered the body at 2.43pm and, fol-

lowing tests, have confirmed it was the Fletcher Street woman.

They said that the death was not suspicious but that a post mortem examination was planned to find out the cause of death.

An inquest will now determine how Miss McWhirter died.

A police appeal was launched in February when police became concerned about the whereabouts of the "vulnerable" woman.

She was 5ft 4ins tall and of slight build and went missing late on a Friday night - sparking a police investigation.
