ST MARIES suffered a surprise loss to a much-improved Woolston team.

Despite the prompting of Bobbie Goulding and the barging runs of Harry Naughton and Carl Mercer, St Maries could not find a way through the opposition defence.

The much bigger Woolston team wore down the dogged defence of St Maries and after 18 minutes they scored from close range to make the half time score 6-0.

The second half saw a slight improvement from St Maries but it was clear that they were not playing to their normal standards.

A loose Woolston pass saw Alex Brown race 95 yards for an excellent try in the corner but a fine touchline conversion attempt from Goulding drifted wide.

St Maries inspired by the try, pressed hard to snatch the game but in the end they lacked their usual cohesion and were defeated by their Warrington opponents.
