TOWN councillors are concerned that parking rule cannot be enforced on a majority of roads in Middlewich.

Clr Paul Edwards says that most of the double and single yellow line markings in the town are pointless because they are incomplete following previous road resurfacing work and as a result cannot be enforced properly.

Clr Edwards highlighted a number of roads including Civic Way, Wheelock Street, Queen Street, King Edward Street, Chester Road, High Town, and Leadsmithy Street.

He is especially concerned about the number of cars parking on both sides of the narrow Civic Way where Middlewich Fire Station is based.

Clr Edwards said: "In Civic Way the lines just disappear, they've never been repainted since the road works were done.

"Articulated lorries can just park on Civic Way if they want and people park up there when they go to the chemist. The lines that are there are a waste of time because the police can't stop anyone parking there because they are not complete.

"This could be a big problem if the fire engines have to get down Civic Way and they can't get past the parked cars."

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire Service said the service works closely with the fire authority on traffic conditions, adding: "There have been no problems reported from Middlewich Fire Station."

A spokesman for Cheshire County Council's joint highways committee said: "We work closely with the police and if there is an issue about enforcement then the police will notify us and we will go out to the site and take any action accordingly."

She added that the county council has no record of any problems related to parking enforcement in Middlewich.
