on the right road

A TEAM of safety experts will descend on the M62 at Birchwood later this week.

A special vehicle will record the undulations in the M62 eastbound slip road at Birchwood overnight on Thursday, April 7, and April 8.

The Deflectograph records undulations in the road to an accuracy of one hundredth of a millimetre.

And this shows how strong the underlying surface is allowing Highways Agency staff to plan for any necessary repairs.

The survey will take place late at night - from 10pm, Thursday until Friday at 5am when traffic is very light, so that the slip road can be closed with the minimum of disruption to ensure the safety of both drivers and Highways Agency workers.

Drivers will be diverted westbound on the M62 to Junction 9, returning eastbound from that junction.

Kath Waring, Highways Agency project

manager, said: "This machine can detect potential problems with the road surface so that we can correct them before they become bigger and compromise the safety of traffic using the road.

"It's always our aim to put safety first and to minimise disruption for the travelling public - which is why we will send our team in late at night.

"We ask any drivers who do need to use the junction at that time to be patient and follow the suggested diversion route."
