A STAR of the future helped Hartford Tennis Club to the victory in the winter cup competition.

Jarrod Wood, 15, had already helped the A team through to the final and a strong showing in the winter league.

He linked up again with captain Gareth Eaton to produce a stunning victory against Congleton B to win his first senior doubles trophy.

Team mate Andrew Moores said: "It will be the first of many judging by his performance.

"He's one of the most talented juniors we've had at Hartford and already has a lot of the seniors worried."

Wood, who lives in Hartford, has impressed with his dedication to the sport.

He has had rigorous training with club coach John Walsh and played competitively across Cheshire.

His hard work and improved temperament has been rewarded with a place in Hartford's B team this summer where he will find the competition tougher than in winter.

Moores added: "We wouldn't put him in there if we didn't think he could handle it.

"He has made the step up earlier than most, but it is well deserved."

Hartford pocketed the cup title with a comprehensive 5 to 2 sets win over Congleton.

A week before they had beaten their rivals' A team 8-0, but the final was a closer match.

Moores and Keith Wright secured 2 sets while Wood and Eaton won the rest.

Moores said: "It was a good team performance, which is something Hartford prides itself on.

"It sets us up well for another good summer season."
