as tribute
AN HISTORIC signal box at Helsby train station was the undisputed guest of honour at a national award ceremony held last week.
The box, on platform two, was restored to its original 1900 condition following a National Railway Heritage Trust grant.
Network Rail was careful to maintain the character of the original structure and ensure the redevelopment blended with the 1863 station building and waiting room.
Now their attention to historic detail has won them the Westinghouse Signalling Award. MP Mike Hall unveiled a commemoration plaque at the site on Friday morning.
He said: "This award is excellent news for Helsby as a whole. I know the North Cheshire Rail Users Group has worked particularly hard in recent years to make improvements to the station and were awarded with an award for Best Kept Station in Cheshire"
