IN the Frontrunner premier division Whiston and Halebank would appear to be the only threats to Penlake.

Halebank won their derby match with Moorfield 3-1 on Saturday to stay in the hunt, whilst Whiston thumped last season's top dogs St Michaels 4-1 on Saturday.

Fearnhead's Mike Tilling scored a superb free kick opener to shock hosts Moore United but United hit back to level and then break Fearnhead hearts in the last four minutes with their second goal.

In the Grange Valley sponsored first division on Saturday Town can reclaim top spot this week, but have a tricky match with form team Cronton Villa before facing a daunting trip to face Avon Athletic.

Avon were on the wrong end of a 3-1 defeat at Runcorn Albion, the two mid-table sides producing a good match in blustery conditions.

The second division title battle looks set to go to the wire after Saturday's results.

Beechwood remain on course, but were made to struggle before accounting for mid-table Windle LC.

The 2-1 result leaves second placed Culcheth four points behind Beechwood but with a game in hand.

Third placed Matthiola won a decisive late victory at Mill Brow, Mark Rampley raced 50 yards to claim the break through goal before Amin slotted a second for Matthiola as time ran out.

It was tough on Mill Brow who were in contention throughout, but couldn't find a goal for all their possession and pressure.

Act R Sports have hit a rich vein of form in the past month to boost their hopes of taking the division three crown.

Their latest win a 7-0 demolition of Penketh United leaves the gap between Act R and leaders Runcorn Athletic eight points with three games in hand.

Athletic missed a chance to maintain their grip, with a 6-2 defeat at Winwick United.

Powell had given Athletic the perfect start after just two minutes, but a first half hat trick by United's Daryl Brough ended any hopes of a vital win for the visitors.

Second half scores by Marc Debrander, Chris Appleton and Geoff Picken wrapped up fine win for United.

Graeme Seddon scored Athletic's second from the penalty spot.

There were seven goals and plenty of thrills in the basement battle between Widnes Bayer and Village Social, with Village emerging victors by the odd goal.

In reserve division one, Sidac slammed St Michael's 6-0 on Saturday but were unable to find a goal in their mid-week game with Whiston.

Ford were able to take maximum points on Saturday with a 4-1 win at Halton Borough to stay ahead on goal difference.

Vulcan won the only other game with a handy 2-0 victory over Halebank enough to make the perfect day for the loco-men.

In reserve division two Cronton Villa recorded another win to secure third spot, but the 1-0 score against Blackbrook was far closer than expected.

Vicars Reserves Mike Richardson grabbed a valuable brace to push his side to within a point of leaders Moorfield 3rds at the top of reserve division three.

Gareth Knowles claimed his first senior goal to wrap up a 3-0 win for Vics against Runcorn Albion Reserves.
