WIDNES are now one victory away from securing their position in the Powergen North Two West league following this impressive performance against mid table Bowdon.

With two games left and already relegated Aspull visiting Heath Road this week coach Paul Newall must be hoping for back to back victories.

The Wids raced to a 27-0 half time lead but first had to subdue an early onslaught by the home team.

Skipper Stu Hussey put the first points on the board with a 30-metre penalty after seven minutes.

Peter Van Loo extended the lead on 13 minutes with a well-worked try; great handling by Hussey, Alex Gardiner and Phil Glover created the space for the winger to sprint in.

Man of the match Paul O'Connor was creator and finisher when he made a break in the 24 minute, Johannes Lamprecht was on hand to support the break and then release O'Connor to score.

Hussey converted from by the touchline.

The flying winger was on hand to score again when Rob McLean dashed down the blind side from a scrum and timed his pass to perfection for O'Connor to race in for his second, Hussey added the extras.

Right on half time a pick up from a scrum by Paul Borg created a try for Ben Hazzard, his first for the senior side and just reward for his performances since breaking into the side.

In the second half playing against the wind Widnes changed their tactics and this allowed the home side to put pressure on the visitors line, but great defence limited Bowdon to two tries by Alistair Oldfield and Woody Barlow and a conversation and penalty by Mark Kotze.

Widnes had the last word when that man O'Connor fly-kicked the ball and the chase resulted in a five-metre scrum and another blind side move saw Lamprecht diving over to score in injury time.

This victory was built on team effort and Nick Fellows and Mark Loughnane typified the effort required to stay in this league and young props Ste Vickerstaffe and Liam Wilde gave their older opponents a rough ride in the front row.

The same effort is now required against Aspull this week at Heath Road, kick-off 3pm.
