IT'S hard to believe that council tax needs to increase by 4.9 per cent, or even at all.

Over the last few years, thousands of expensive new homes have been built around Widnes, the increased revenue from which should have more than covered any necessary increase.

Perhaps if the engineers and planners of this borough didn't waste money carrying out totally unnecessary road works, then the town would be far better off.

We have seen junctions in Widnes where the traffic used to flow freely but are now very congested, which apart from anything else, causes a vast increase in pollution and this following a recent health report which stated that Halton still experiences a heavier total pollution load, especially a heavier load of air pollution.

It also says that the average nitrogen dioxide concentrations, produced almost entirely from vehicle exhaust, exceed the annual mean air quality standard for 2005.

It's hardly surprising then that most of the engineers and planners don't live in Widnes.
