While I'm delighted that Stockton Heath Walking Day has been given the go ahead for another year, I understand that a lack of finances may see this as only a temporary reprieve.
One revenue stream that is not being exploited at the moment (and which would finance Walking Day for the next 10 years) would be to fine the countless drivers that park illegally outside the local Sainsbury's store in Stockton Heath.
Putting a sign in shop windows asking people not to park illegally has proved hopeless. People will only start to change their behaviour when you hit them in their pocket.
I've lost count of the number of times that 'sod the law' parking on that stretch of London Road has led to unnecessary delays for drivers being obstructed while queuing at the traffic lights.
Start issuing parking tickets not polite notices and use the income to finance the biggest community event of the year, Stockton Heath Walking day!
