SO Dawn Jarvis and Ann Robinson think Warrington smells (Guardian, March 23/31).

Had they lived in Warrington in the 1930s to 1940s, they would have had plenty to smell, particularly if you lived in the Orford area.

We had the 'Products' works, off Winwick Road, Longford, blowing on the westerly winds and the Bone works from the east, also the tannery in Sandy Lane, Orford, and if you lived around Pinners Brow you had the brewery in competition with Flemings Tannery where all hides were on display.

If you lived in Stockton Heath, Grappenhall or Latchford, there were more tanneries, plus the Ship Canal and the River Mersey.

When the Manchester liners came along, they churned up all the silt from the bottom. And what about the nostalgic steam engines and the steam wagons that used to travel our streets, all the brewers and Alliance Box works had them, all belching out smoke?

These are now my sweet smelling memories of old Warrington, not to mention the thick pea soupers we had every winter. Smells, what smells?
