A MUM and her son fear that the closure of the Dallam Day Centre, in Bewsey, will leave a hole in the lives of people who rely on its service.

Julie Jones, aged 46, of Langton Green, Woolston is worried that her son John will be lost without the support and services the centre provides.

John, aged 28, was injured in a road traffic incident 11 years ago and attends the centre on Dallam Lane five days a week.

Miss Jones said: "A lot of people are very upset and concerned that the centre is closing.

"We knew the current day centre's land was to be built on because of redevelopment, but we understood that a new day centre could be built on land set aside in Latchford.

"Now we've been told there is no land available."

Miss Jones has gathered more than 1,000 signatures in a petition to save the centre.

She said: "I am worried that the users of the centre will have to be dispersed across town.

"I have two questions that nobody has answered - one, why not arrange the land to build another centre and two, if this is to be done, how long will we be without?"

A social services meeting hosted at the Warrington Disability Partnership's Centre For Independent Living on Beaufort Street looked at the problem of where the day centre's work can be continued.

WDP service manager, Christine Hawthorn, said: "There was a lot of anxiety for people who use the centre.

"We are looking at what services people feel they need and where they can be provided.

"Questionnaires are being handed out to help gather public opinion."

Pam Smith, borough council head of service for Older People and Physical Disability Services, said: "No decision has yet been made about the future provision of services offered by the centre. We are in the process of reviewing what service users want as we are committed to taking advantage of opportunities to modernise the service.

"A working group, which includes representatives of service users and carers, has been set up to consider the various options available. A number of consultations have been carried out and the results will be taken into account."
