COUNCILLORS have passed plans to build a mobile phone mast close to a Statham beauty spot.

Mobile phone giants Orange can now erect a 20 metre high mast next to the green belt.

The plans had proved controversial with borough councillors, residents and the parish council all objecting.

Clr Sheila Woodyatt told the meeting of the development control committee that the mast would be very intrusive.

She added: "It is very close to a site of importance for nature conservation, the Statham ox-bow lake, and its duck pond.

"I know there are mixed opinions about health risks.

"I would ask the members here: Would you want this monstrosity near to you?

"An alternative site should be found away from people which is less visually intrusive."
