LYMM Golf Club is to celebrate its 100th birthday with a trip back in time... and a look to the future.

The club's centenary takes place in 1907, but the plans are already in place to make it a birthday to remember.

For the past three years, a committee has been hard at work in a bid to produce a special anniversary.

Among the events will be a family fun day and summer ball as well as a golf competition played the Edwardian way with authentic hickory clubs and vintage golf balls.

On the course, not only is a floral display planned for the first tee, but a centenary bridge will be built across one of the ditches - reminiscent to the one at the Swilcan Burn at St Andrew's Old Course.

While a history of the club is being written, charting the story of the Whitbarrow Road club which is closely tied with the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal.

But the committee needs money to make the dreams become reality and a grand charity auction, with lots including a signed Lancashire cricket bat, signed Question of Sport shirt and signed Peter Alliss book, is set for October 14.

As well as raising funds for the centenary - two charities chose by the club captains will reap the benefits.

Steps, a national charity for children with lower limb abnormalities, and The Kabuki Syndrome, which supports children with a rare chromosome deletion which produces disabling symptoms, will also benefit from the scheme.

The committee is currently seeking pledges, promises and items for the auction.
