NANTWICH Town suffered last-minute heartbreak as Abbey Hey left Jackson Avenue with three points, last Saturday.

Matt Blake had given the Dabbers a deserved lead in the second-half but Baird and Bailey combined to turn the tables and condemn the hosts to a fourth straight loss.

It was a big shock after Nantwich had dictated terms in the first half.

John Scarlett rattled the bar while Danny Griggs was only denied by both the post and a fine point-blank save from the keeper.

Blake scored from an acute angle to finally make that dominance count on 55 minutes but the foot came off the gas.

Baird's long-range effort crept in the bottom corner on 70 minutes before Bailey nicked all the points with a last-gasp winner.

"We were the better side and I thought we were a bit unlucky," said player manager Steve Davis.

"We lost it ourselves really.

"With the way we've been playing, it was a better performance.

"You could tell we were more hungry and the commitment was there.

"We created the best chances in the first half but didn't take them.

"We lost it ourselves rather than they won it although I'm a bit gutted with the goals."

With a few missing, Davis took the opportunity to check out his fringe players and run the rule over debutant keeper Chris Kapola.

The 19-year-old was formerly with Rocester and Alsager.

"Chris did okay," he added.

"It was a chance to have a look at him and see what he's like for next season.

"We missed four or five key players really.

"We didn't have Glyn Blackhurst, Paul Santos or Tim Alexander and they can make a difference for us.

"We should be beating sides like that really."

No game for Nantwich on Saturday but they entertain league leaders Fleetwood on Tuesday.

Ex-boss Nigel Gleghorn will be hoping for a shock with current side Newcastle their only real rivals for the title.

"Obviously it's a tough game for us, particularly on our last four results," added Davis.

"But it's also an opportunity to cause an upset.

"They need to keep winning and we want to get the three points ourselves.

"We should have a few back and a strong team out.

"If we can do Nigel a favour, we will."
