READING received a boost on Saturday as a well-known author unveiled a new look at Golborne Library.
Following a £60,000 makeover, writer and broadcaster Stuart Maconie led the opening together with the Mayor of Wigan - and chairman of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust - Jacqui Boardman.
More than 100 people were invited to view the new-look library, which is the first of its kind in the borough.
Stuart Maconie said: "One of my favourite lyrics is the Manic Street Preachers' 'libraries gave us power' from A Design For Life, so I'm obviously very proud to be asked here today.
"As a child I grew up in the area's libraries and they played a key role in my education.
"Back then libraries were very cold, colourless and uninviting, but what the trust has done at Golborne is fantastic - a more lively and welcoming place, where I think children will feel that reading is not a chore but something that is an exciting adventure."
During the event, the author read a passage from his book Cider With Roadies in the adult section of the library, while youngsters were entertained by storytellers in the children's section.
Key improvements include expanding bookstock, creating a purpose-built computer suite, developing reading groups, homework clubs and learning activities.
