Bringing a whole new outlook to Biddulph

BIDDULPH town centre is earmarked for a major transformation over the next 15 years.

A radical plan is being created setting out a vision of the town as a place in which to shop, work, live and spend leisure time.

Four schemes have been put together for the development of the town centre, and include the creation of a new supermarket, shops and library.

They also envisage the development of a one-way system in the town centre, and the pedestrianisation of the heart of the town.

Four options have been developed for the so-called Area Action Plan, and have gone out to public consultation, which ends on April 22.

Comments received will be taken into account in the development of a preferred option.

The plan will have to go out to statutory consultation and be submitted to the Secretary of State, and is unlikely to be adopted before December 2006.

In one option the triangular site north of Wharf Road, between High Street/Station Road and the bypass would be developed for a new supermarket and car park.

There would also be a new library, shops, market and Labour Club, with the existing library, former market and part of the Kwik Save car park being developed for housing.

New bus facilities would be provided on Wharf Road, and there would be a new one-way system through the town centre.

Leaflets explaining the various options and comment forms are available at Biddulph Councils Connect, Biddulph Library and Biddulph Resource and Information Centre.
