A CARAVANNER staying in Northwich attempted to drive home to Warrington while over the legal limit, a court heard.

Carol Leigh, 62, of Heathfield Park, Grappenhall, admitted the drink driving charge when she appeared at Northwich Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

Sue Gibson, prosecuting, explained that Leigh was stopped on Warrington Road in Acton Bridge on March 27, when a police dog handler saw her driving towards him with no headlights on.

He turned his van around and followed her before stopping her, which was when he noticed a strong smell of alcohol.

Ms Gibson said: "He asked her how much she'd had to drink and she said 'too much - I know I'm over the legal limit'."

She was driving with 65mg of alcohol in 100 ml of breath, when the legal limit is 35mg.

Henry Hills, defending, said Leigh and her husband had had a drinks party on the previous evening.

In the early hours of the morning they had an argument and Leigh decided to drive home to Grappenhall.

Mr Hills said: "She feels very ashamed by the fact that she's before the court for this offence."

Magistrates disqualified Mrs Leigh from driving for 16 months and ordered her to pay a £100 fine and £20 court costs.
