A NEW post office is to open in Widnes town centre tomorrow, Thursday, April 14.

The former 'Absolutely Fabulous' boutique in Albert Square has been transformed into a six-counter branch.

It comes 15 months after Halton MP Derek Twigg accused bosses of "sheer incompetence" for leaving customers without a town centre service.

He summoned Post Office bosses to Westminster for crunch talks after they suddenly closed the Co-op branch, axeing 11 jobs, on January 21, 2004.

The new post office will offer free personal banking, foreign currency, benefit payments plus car tax and passport applications.

It will be open from 8.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturday.

The post office in Peelhouse Lane will close on May 10, as part of a national rationalisation programme.
