A ROUNDABOUT in Middlewich has been described as an eyesore by neighbours who want to know why it has been ignored for the past five years.

Two years ago plans to improve the B5309 Centurion Way roundabout, situated on one of the main roads into the town, were discussed by councillors and residents, but according to Ann Walker, of Jersey Way, nothing came of the talks.

Ann, 68, said: "We were called to a meeting a couple of years ago to discuss a project for the roundabout and we were told there was a grant available that could be used to make improvements.

"At that time it was proposed that they landscaped the roundabout and it was also suggested that a figure of a Roman Centurion carved in wood would look appropriate in the centre."

But Ann says plans never got off the ground and feels the roundabout has been overlooked.

She said: "It's just a disgrace - all the others in the town are lovely. It's often thick with dandelions and it just looks a real mess.

"With all the hundreds of new houses built in the past five years and therefore a vast increase in the local council tax, why has nothing been done?"

Middlewich councillor Alison Roylance-White, who tried to obtain the grant for the roundabout, said: "The roundabout is on the list of priorities for the community pride group. We are conscious of it and it's definitely an area that we want to work on but unfortunately the grant has ceased to exist.

"I have spoken to Congleton Borough Council to ensure that the roundabout was mowed because I think it can get overlooked as it is on the periphery."

She added: "It is an area we want to address but there is also a large list of priorities to work through."
