MIDDLEWICH teenagers are likely to be denied the chance of a new place to meet after residents voiced strong objections to a proposed youth shelter.

On Monday night a group of residents living near the Booth Lane play area - the site mooted for the sheltered seating area - met with members of Middlewich Vision, Congleton Community Action Team and Congleton Borough Council to discuss their concerns about the proposals.

The meeting was organised by Caroline O'Brien, from the Middlewich Vision, who has worked on the proposal for months in a bid to try to allay any fears residents had about the youth shelter after receiving a petition against the idea.

But Stephen Dent, also from the vision group, said neighbours were not supportive of the proposal and believes the shelter is now likely to go elsewhere in the borough.

He said: "They were very concerned about anti-social behaviour and just don't want the shelter to be based there even for a six month trial basis."

"It's quite disappointing really because one of the main things that came out of our consultation last year was that there aren't enough youth facilities in the town. We're probably going to lose it for Middlewich now. We've looked at other locations in the town and the only places that are not really near any housing are too remote, which is not ideal for the kids. People tend to forget to think about it from a young person's perspective."
