WHEN President Helen Sutton commenced the March business meeting of Bostock and District WI it was soon apparent that members were going to have a busy few months.

It started with a 10 pin bowling outing, an invitation to Moulton WI, the group meeting and afternoon tea at Margaret Webb's. Members finished with a strawberry tea to raise funds for the county federation.

Speaker Dr Mike Hems, who has been on a photographic expedition to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, showed some beautiful slides of the many species of humming birds which inhabit Ecuador and said that a number of the flowers, such as impatiens, are now found in this country.

He then moved onto the volcanic islands of the Galapagos where Charles Darwin worked on The Origin of Species. Pictures of birds like crazy blue-footed booby and the albatross were so fantastic it almost felt possible to reach out and stroke their feathers. There was a magnificent shot of a gull scratching its ear in flight.

The photographs of large tortoises, lizards, seals, sea lions and nippy crabs, along with Mike's informative and amusing commentary, made members feel they had really visited the islands.
