A VALIANT Vikings performance in defeat has given Widnes the belief they need for victory ahead of their most important game of the season.

The gutsy attacking display by a Widnes side revitalised by players returning from injury and new signings ran high-flying Hull close and coach Frank Endacott is calling on more of the same this Sunday.

"I was really encouraged by the performance," the kiwi said of his side's 32-28 defeat. "We went there to get a result, didn't quite get it but it was the best we've played all year, even against Bradford when we won.

"Getting some players back has really made the difference and the mood is really positive again," he added. "This is the most important game of the year to date.

"We can either join the group above us or get left behind and this is the game where it's got to be an all-out win."

The Vikings now have eleven home games in the remaining 19-game league programme to reach the 20 point mark Endacott believes is enough to beat the drop.

A side already bolstered by debutants Gray Viane and Richie Barnett against Hull and fit-again halfbacks Stephen Myler and Owen Craigie will welcome inspirational skipper Shane Millard and experienced fullback Gary Connolly for the visit of a miserly Salford side that have the fourth best defensive record in Super League.

"Shane Millard is back this weekend and that's already been a huge lift to the side," Endacott said. "Gary Connolly is certainly in contention and I was excited about both the new signings. I saw a lot of things I liked.

"Salford have built their game around defence and defence wins matches but I'm confident we'll score points against them. We don't see ourselves as underdogs and know we can go out there and beat them."

The Vikings squad to face Salford on Sunday (KO 3pm) is expected to remain the same with only Jon Whittle and Paul Ballard the long-term absentees although centre Adam Hughes will be given another week to fully recover from a hamstring injury.
