THE work of voluntary group Justice and Peace, which missed out on a council grant, has been praised.

A staff member of Halton Women's Aid, a shelter for victims of domestic violence, said: "They have been really useful for our residents - it's going to be a shame if the service isn't allowed to continue."

Justice and Peace did not get a council grant of £4,900 because it did not complete an internal audit in time.

The group, which has spent 17 years redistributing furniture and food to the needy, says the council cancelled vital meetings, did not communicate properly and failed to send the paperwork.

Jackie Corrigan, the service manager for Halton Imagine, a mental health charity, said: "They are really good, very helpful. To not give an organisation like that a grant is detrimental to the community.

"If there were problems with dates or forms consideration should be given to a group like that."

Sister Teresa, of the Catholic Children's Society said: "I don't think this is a good decision. Justice and Peace put in a lot of work in their own time."

Andy Guile, of Halton Lodge YMCA, said: "They have certainly helped our residents in the past. It's very disappointing to hear they haven't had a grant this year."

A spokesman for Halton Council said: "Only one meeting was cancelled by Halton Council.

"Since August 2004 the council had attempted to set up several meetings but Justice and Peace failed to make contact."
