THE Wids have secured their place in the Powergen North Two West league for next season with this win against already relegated Aspull.

The Heath Road outfit made heavy going against a side that clearly came to frustrate the home side.

Widnes skipper and talisman Stu Hussey created the opening for Phil Glover to break the deadlock after nine minutes with a smart try which Hussey converted.

On the stroke of half time Hussey stretched the Wids' lead with a try, which resulted from a Paul Borg break from the halfway line.

The move was kept alive by Peter Van Loo who kicked the ball into the visitor's in-goal area and chased his kick and tackled the full back.

From the resulting five-metre scrum Hussey jinxed his way over.

The Widnes captain added the extras.

In a dour second half the only points came from the boot of Glover, who knocked over a 35-metre penalty after 71 minutes.

In the closing minutes Aspull put the home sideline under pressure as they looked for a consolation try, but great Widnes defence kept them at bay.

This was obviously an important win for the Wids but it had to be gained by patients as the visitors repeatedly tried to kill the ball.

Prominent throughout the game was second row forward Nick Fellows and again Liam Wilde had an outstanding game as he has done every week since breaking into the side.

The Wids have a week's rest before travelling to Aspatria for the final game of the season.
