THEATRE-GOERS will be given an insight into the oddities of a country life as Oscar Wilde's A Woman of No Importance arrives at the Harlequin Theatre tonight, Wednesday.

Oscar Wilde's play satirises the country house lifestyle of Lady Hunstanton as she entertains weekend guests at her rural retreat.

Among the visitors are the young American beauty Hester, the alluring Mrs Allonby and the subdued Mrs Arburthnot and her son Gerald.

Festivities are going to plan until the corrupter Lord Illingworth comes face to face with the past and all havoc breaks loose. A host of witty one-liners underlies the play but revelations of Mrs Arburthnot's troubled history change the tone dramatically.

Gordon Hamlin directs the Harlequin Players' 10-strong cast, with familiar faces such as Alan Prior, Mike and Maureen Melville and Caroline Young making appearances.

The show runs at the Queen Street theatre until Saturday, April 16 and performances begin at 7.45pm. For tickets, ring 01606 41597.
