WARRINGTON golfer Ian Winstanley has won the first event of a prestigious competition established by former Open and Masters champion Nick Faldo.

The 17-year-old shot the lowest score in the Faldo Series event held at Ganton Golf Club, North Yorkshire, despite facing golfers up to four years older than him.

Ian, who is a member of Formby Golf Club, had a strong front nine and then stunningly hit a massive drive to within two feet of the hole at the par-four 17th to set up an eagle.

An 18th-hole double bogey slightly blemished his card, but he still recorded a two-under-par 71 to not only win the boys' under 18s age category but the overall event as well.

Ian will compete in two more Faldo Series events in the north east in May and August, and will qualify for the national final later in the year if he accumulates enough points - the victory at Ganton earned him the maximum 15 points - to top his age category over the three events.
