EIGHT months of intensive training will be put to the test on Sunday when Fiona McGrath competes in a marathon for the first time.

Building up to the 26-mile slog around the streets of London has been a big commitment for the Warrington Athletics Club runner.

The 26-year-old started out by pounding 10 miles per week and increased that load to 50 miles before completing a marathon distance in practice three weeks ago.

"It is a huge commitment but it is something I have wanted to do since I saw the race on the television. I like the atmosphere of the occasion and it is a chance to raise some money for Cancer Research UK too."

McGrath's training helped her to knock three minutes off her personal best time at the half marathon distance in Altrincham last month.

She has been running since she was 11 years old and works in the finance department for BUPA at Salford Quays.

Sport is a family affair for the McGraths, who live in Stockton Heath.

Her father, Neil, won a number of championships as a racing drvier in the 1970s and 80s, while her mother, Margaret, plays for Stockton Heath Tennis Club.
