DEVASTATED Alex boss Dario Gradi was left unsure of his side's Championship fate after astonishing events at the New Den.

Crewe's heroic fight-back from 3-0 down ended up in vein when Ben May tucked away a controversial 85th minute penalty after Kenny Lunt was adjudged to have brought down Dennis Wise.

Clearly dejected after the final whistle at Millwall, Gradi feels chances of beating the drop are evens.

"I don't know whether we can stay up or not," he said.

"It's evens.

"We haven't won a game for God knows how long so I can't say we will win another two.

"I'm really disappointed because we got back level and it was stirring stuff.

"But I'm always worried when you get a penalty away from home that you might concede one.

"I'm not saying the ref tried to even things up, just that my players shouldn't have got themselves into a position where he could award a penalty."

Mistakes proved costly again.

"I feel pretty awful and I'm sure the players and supporters here feel the same because we did some stupid things that cost us," he added.

"We were nave for their goals.

"Kenny got blocked off for the free kick and he should know better than that.

"Luke gave away a silly free-kick for their third and then Kenny got conned by Dennis Wise when he shouldn't have done.

"We looked dead and buried at 3-0 down and I was completely browned off then.

"But credit to the lads, they fought back and it was a terrific comeback to get level.

"We ended up getting nothing when maybe we deserved something and that is the most annoying thing."

Gradi drew positives from the performance of Steve Jones who put personal problems aside to net Crewe's second.

"The most encouraging thing from today is that Steve Jones looked lively, scored a great goal and could have had a couple more," he continued.

"He looked his old self and we need more of that.

"Andy did okay there and Luke got in there for his goal.

"We still need to do some work with Luke but we looked dangerous and that's a plus to take into the Gillingham game."
