ST HELENS Housing Association has agreed to become part of the Arena Housing Group, in a move which bosses say will benefit residents extensively.

St Helens Housing Association as a whole will gain from increased financial security, enabling St Helens to commit to long and short term improvements to residents' homes, but it will still retain its independence and identity as an association.

Frank Smith, chairman of St Helens Housing, said: "St Helens Housing Association is keen to build on its positive reputation of providing quality homes since its inception in 1929.

"It is increasingly difficult to do this with ever increasing regulations and a very tight financial climate.

"Therefore, we decided to seek a partnership with a financially stronger and larger housing association, Arena."

Malcolm Haigh, chairman of Arena, said: "We are really pleased to welcome St Helens Housing as part of our group."

The group now manages around 11,000 houses and flats in the north west and provides many specialist services, such as the care and repair initiative to help older, disabled or low-income homeowners.
