A JOINT investigation is to be launched by fire and police officers in an attempt to catch the arsonists responsible for a spate of car fires in Winsford.

Fire crews have responded to six car fires since last Monday with each of the incidents taking place in the early hours of the morning.

Sub officer Andy Banks, based at Winsford Fire Station, said: "I think it may be the same group as they are happening at around the same time and in the same sort of area.

"We will now contact the police officer who deals with arson and hopefully we can deal with the situation and catch them."

The vehicle fires took place just after 7am on Monday on Weaver Valley Road, Cherry Crescent, at 2.40am on Friday, Clive Back Road at 9pm on the same evening, as well as a second fire on Cherry Crescent at 3.45am on Sunday and Mill Lane at 5am on the same morning.

The latest incident took place on Grange Lane at 7.10am yesterday, Tuesday, and sub officer Banks has highlighted the danger of car fires. He said: "It is highly dangerous because of the plastics and the petrol which can cause an explosion.

"Each car fire costs the rate payer £1,000 and there is also the fact that when we are dealing with an incident like this we can't respond if something else happens."
