CASTLE Private's Paul Mackie narrowly missed out on a date in the final stages of the Shrewsbury Coors Meole Open on Sunday.

Mackie was knocked out in the quarter final by eventual runner up Danny Barwise, of Liverpool, who won through with a 21-18 scoreline.

The Castle Private bowler had previously beaten Paul Asson (Drake's Drum) 21-10 and Andy Ferris (Stoke) 21-16.

Mid Cheshire's other representative in the £3,200 event, Danny Nixon (Wharton Cons) lost 21-16 to Stafford's Glyn Storer in his first match on finals day.

Jason Cornes, of Castle Private, and Phil Cookson, of Wharton Cons, have both won three games to qualify for the final 16 of the Woodley Sports Spring Classic to be played on Sunday.

Cornes will take on Alan Bidwell (Failsworth) in his last 16 match, while Cookson has been drawn against Normanton's John Webster.
