KNUTSFORD Rugby Club were promoted at the weekend in only their first season together.

On Saturday they were rewarded the prize they so desperately craved when Marple beat Wirral 20-19, which ensured Wirral did not move above Knutsford in the final standings. Knutsford gained promotion to North West Division 4 South after finishing runners-up in the fifth division, second only to the unbeaten Marple.

Many of the Knutsford players and supporters travelled to Marple for the crucial fixture on Saturday.

Both teams impressed in an enthralling encounter.

With 10 minutes remaining, Wirral led 19-10 and Knutsford's hopes seemed to be fading.

However, when Marple scored a try in the corner they pulled back to within two points following a beautifully struck conversion. In the final minute of the game, Marple were awarded with a penalty after a Wirral player lost his temper.

William Shakespeare could not have written this script and when Marple's fly half calmly slotted the penalty through the uprights the elation from Marple was far outweighed by that of the travelling Knutsford support.

"When we began this season in September, some of us dreamed of gaining promotion in our inaugural season, however, not one of us truly believed it" said club captain Gareth Walton.

"What the guys have achieved is truly remarkable and they have done themselves and their club proud. "Our motto is 'Play With Pride' enough." Some of the older players will now take a couple of months to recuperate whilst the colts and younger seniors continue to train on Wednesday nights in preparation for what will now be a very tough season in September.

On Saturday, Knutsford host the first annual inter-club President's XV v Chairman's XV. Kick-off is at 3pm.

On Sunday May 1st, Knutsford are playing in the Bowdon 7's tournament.
