Fatal collision at accident blackspot

A 29-YEAR-OLD man was killed in a car smash on the A530 Nantwich-Whitchurch road in rural Nantwich on Saturday morning.

The man from the Stoke-on-Trent area, who has not been named, received fatal injuries in the collision at 6.14am.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said he was driving a blue Honda Civic towards Nantwich when he was in collision with a silver Freelander Land Rover travelling in the opposite direction.

It took a firefighting team from Nantwich more than an hour to cut the man free from the wreckage of his car.

The driver of the other vehicle received serious injuries and is still undergoing treatment at Leighton.

The accident is the latest in the string of fatal collisions on the country road at Faddiley in recent years.

A spokesman for the Merseyside Regional Ambulance Service said: "We had a report of a two vehicle collision involving one car which had turned upside down in a ditch on the Nantwich side of Primebake bakery.

"A patient was trapped in the upturned vehicle and Leighton Hospital in Crewe was informed as it was such a serious incident.

"It was clearly considered extra serious as the medical aid team took along a consultant to the scene.

"The man had suffered multiple injuries including severe chest injuries and possible broken legs, although we managed to keep him stable while he was removed from the wreckage."

The man was taken to Leighton Hospital but died later from his injuries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident and anyone with information should call Sergeant Foley on 01244 613641.
