NEWTON Cricket Club almost grabbed a victory in their opening Liverpool and District League match of the season at Ainsdale on Saturday despite four hours of play being lost to rain.

Showers combined with three days of bad weather to mean that the pitch only became playable at 3pm, when Newton - who gave a debut to Andy Horsfield - were put in to bat.

An excellent batting display from brothers Ian and Mike Walkden saw them score 31 and 35 respectively as Newton recovered from a bad start to reach 120 for 9 declared.

Ikram Malik then took three wickets as Ainsdale were reduced to 47 for 5 before the overs ran out for Newton.

The second XI endured a similar experience as they declared on 165 for 7 against their Ainsdale counterparts, but could not clinch the final three wickets as their opponents finished on 60 for 7 after Warburton's bowling had dismissed three batsmen.

Newton third XI's match against Sefton Park was abandoned due to waterlogged conditions.
