I refer to the letter from Gary Bebbington (Guardian, April 14).
United Utilities would like to reassure its customers that the current review - which is of the council tax banding system - will not affect how the company charges its customers for water and wastewater services.
Although, as Mr Bebbington states, water and wastewater charges for non-metered household customers are calculated using the rateable value of a property, this is an entirely separate system from council tax banding.
United Utilities cannot, by law, use council tax bands as a method of calculating our charges. Ofwat, the water industry regulator, reviews and approves our charging mechanisms, including any price rises. This is an open and accountable process.
A leaflet showing how a customer's water and wastewater charges are calculated always accompanies our bill but if customers have any further questions on the subject they can call us on 0845 746 2222.
