I welcome the remarks made by Brian Simpson (Guardian, April 14).

Central Station is a disgrace. There are no facilities for parents with prams or for those with disabilities to cross from the Manchester to the Liverpool side (apart from struggling up steps). There have been some minor improvements at Bank Quay over the past 20 years but hardly up to 21st century standard. However, the intermediate stations require urgent attention. If one travels from Liverpool and alights at Sankey Station, one is in danger of serious injury because of the difference in the height of the platform and the height of the carriage.

Although ramps are carried on the trains, staff say that one uses them at 'your own risk'.

It therefore appears that our railways are exempt from health and safety regulations.
