LYMM Rugby Club Colts' Twickenham dream is over in heartbreaking fashion.

The under 17s northern champions missed out on a glory day in London after losing 21-20 to Worcester in the semi final of the National Championship at Doncaster on Sunday.

With less than one minute of time left and leading 20-14, the Lymm players and spectators felt that they had done enough.

Lymm won possession from a scrum and the ball was booted into touch but the expected full time whistle at that point did not blow.

Worcester won the line-out and lifted themselves for one last assault.

They kept the ball alive and battered at the Lymm defences.

For two minutes Lymm withstood the onslaught but eventually they conceded a try.

With the score at 20-19 to Lymm, the Worcester fly-half was faced with a difficult kick into the wind and to his credit he struck it beautifully to break Lymm's hearts.

The young team have done the club proud to reach the level they have against the best sides in the country and many lessons will have been learnt, especially how to defend a lead.

With five minutes left to play, Lymm were 20-7 ahead and on a high.

They had played some excellent rugby both in defence and attack.

Lymm should then have been kicking the ball into the opposition's corners to keep them on the back foot.

Instead they either took them on in the middle of the park or tried parallel kicks down the touch line, which mainly went straight in touch for the ball to be brought back for the opposition's line-out throw.

The result was Lymm conceding a try 33 minutes into the half and then their hopes being shattered with the final kick of the game.

Lymm took the lead after two minutes from a line-out, where they took a rolling maul over the line for flanker Ashley Rockey to score an unconverted try.

It was 25 minutes before Worcester got close to the Lymm line and they were eventually awarded a try which they converted.

In the second half, with the wind behind them, Lymm dominated proceedings and the midlands champions hardly got into the Lymm half.

Matthew Barnes-Smith kicked a penalty for Lymm to retake the lead at 8-7.

Two minutes later they charged down a kick and Ashley Rockey popped up the ball as he was tackled for Bobby Gould to score.

Fly-half Jonny Brown scored an individual try and Barnes-Smith added the conversion.
