PLANS for a new skate park in Statham could be thwarted by residents' protests.

A meeting of Lymm Parish Council heard from people who live near to the proposed site at Ridgeway Grundy Park.

They say that building the £24,000 facility would create a focal point for misbehaving youths and target only a small minority of the community.

John Gilmore, who lives nearby, said the site would be a gathering point for youths 24 hours a day.

He added: "Residents have experience of youths coming into the centre of Lymm to cause trouble. This facility would be a focal point for such activity."

Planning permission still needs to be given to the scheme, which has been funded through grant applications.

Residents can see the plans and find out more at the display in the village hall in Pepper Street on Friday, April 29 between 5pm and 7pm.

Parish councillors are keen to point out that the park will only contain four units and will be a benefit for the young people.

Clr Sheila Woodyatt said: "This has been under discussion for three years following a full consultation with local schools.

"It is unfortunate that people have got the wrong impression. I hope they will come along to the exhibition so they can see what is happening."
