THE new leader of the Catholic Church has been backed by a Warrington priest after the pair met in 1994.

Father Peter Montgomery of Our Lady's RC Church, of St Mary's Street, welcomed the papal appointment of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger.

The Latchford priest met John Paul II's successor 11 years ago in Rome during his time as secretary to the former Bishop of Shrewsbury, Joseph Grey.

Speaking after Tuesday's announcement Father Montgomery said: "I'm grateful the role has been decided as many people will look to him for strong leadership.

"When I accompanied Bishop Grey to the Vatican, I found the Cardinal as many have since described him, a thoughtful listener, with an intelligent astute mind.

"In particular he was very courteous, even when he did not share the views of others."

Despite the new pontiff being a known as staunch hardliner, Father Montgomery added that the Pope may take a different approach in his new role.

He is the 265th papal leader and the first German since the 11th century.
