JUDO fanatics can train with some of the best equipment on offer at the new base of Warrington Samurai Judo Club.

The club, in Wellfield Street, was officially opened on Saturday by sports chief Lord Hoyle.

Glenis Bamber, secretary of Warrington Samurai Judo Club, said: "We are delighted with our new facility and hope that new members, previously experienced judokas, and visiting judo players from the north west will come along and enjoy it with us.

"Judo is an ideal sport for everyone of any age, both boys and girls, men and women, of varying sizes and abilities, and we hope that this new facility will encourage a few more people to come along and give it a try.

"The club members would like to thank everybody who has helped in the relocation to the new premises."

Warrington Samurai Judo Club faced closure back in 2000 when landowners Peel Holdings submitted plans for a housing development at Manor Lock in Latchford - where the club was based.

A campaign to save it from demolition was launched, supported by Kate Howie, who was sports minister at the time, and Peel Holdings agreed to offer a loan of nearly £225,000 to help it relocate.
