MEMBERS of a run down boxing club are appealing for help to refurbish their facilities in a bid to tackle anti-social behaviour.

Winsford Amateur Boxing Club, on Royle Street, is in the process of major building work to turn its gym into a thriving centre for young people.

Tommy Blackmore set up the club 35 years ago and he hopes the refurbishment will give the organisation a new lease of life.

He said: "This is the first time it has been done up in 35 years and it really is badly in need of it.

"But we can't do it ourselves and we need all the help we can get."

Tommy has boxed for England in the past and he hopes the improvements will help develop the talents of promising young sportsmen.

He said: "I get more satisfaction from watching these kids develop as people than I did from winning matches.

"There are a lot of misconceptions about boxing.

"It teaches these kids discipline because it has to come from within.

"I have seen kids come here who are in trouble with the police, been in jail or have had other problems and then I see them years later leading great lives.

"I have applied for a grant from Winsford Town Council so if we get that it will be a huge help."

Paul McCarthy, who owns Liquid Lounge, has offered to carry out much of the building work himself.

He said: "I'm positive that if we get this place sorted it will be great for Winsford.

"We can channel kids' aggression into something positive and get them off the streets and into a club where they are given something to work at.

"That will without doubt help to tackle things like anti-social behaviour.

"But we need more help and would like to hear from anyone who would be able to donate equipment or help in any way."

Anyone who would like to help the boxing club or wants to become a member can ring Tommy Blackmore on 01606 551556.
