PLANS to create a multi-million pound equestrian centre in Oakmere have been met with public support ahead of a borough council decision.

Businessman Tony Wilson is seeking permission from Vale Royal to develop land at Brownfield Lane - formerly used by a mineral extraction company - into a full sized polo ground, stabling and grooms' accommodation, show-jumping facilities, a training centre and a cross-country course.

Mr Wilson said: "We haven't had any objections so far, in fact we've had lots of support from all different angles, from people adjacent to the plans to local people excited about the opportunity, so hopefully everything will be approved.

"The project will take around two years to complete but it will be worth it.

"I've been working towards the idea for the past 12 months, having things like architectural geological assessments carried out, and getting the move passed by parish councils, so now it's just a matter of awaiting the council's decision."

The centre would promote the playing of polo and would encourage newcomers' interest in the sport.

Mr Wilson added: "The site is more likely to appeal to those in the professional equestrian field but with a whole host of proposed services, there will hopefully be something for everyone."

The Cheshire Polo Club-backed development would also create a number of job vacancies, with roles such as horse trainers, stabling attendants, horse fair helpers, fitness instructors and veterinarians expected to become available.

Chairman David Woodd, of UK polo governing body Hurlingham Polo Association, said: "We would welcome any facility which promoted the sport and it definitely sounds like a fantastic opportunity for the people of Cheshire."
