THERE is a sad shortage of qualified dog groomers in Northwich. Considering the vast number of these pets in the area, it is becoming a problem for some owners.

Dog grooming, like hairdressing, is a skilled occupation. It needs intensive training and hopefully a certificate of proficiency at the end.

A comprehensive knowledge of breeds is desirable and it is here that most groomers fail.

Some cannot tell the difference between a setter and a spaniel.

There is a tendency to groom all breeds the same way, namely a quick shearing all over with electric shavers, claws carelessly clipped, swift dousing with scent and that is that.

To groom any dog properly takes at least two-and-a-half hours and for some breeds longer.

Prices are usually worked out by the time taken and if the groomer is good, it is well worth every penny.

The problem in the Northwich area is the lack of choice.

Recommendation is all-important and I have heard horrendous tales of local groomers doing unacceptable work.

I have yet to see any adverts offering professional grooming courses, but there is certainly a dire need for such a service in Northwich.
